Career in Architecture

Architecture means the art and science of designing buildings and other physical structures. However, over the past few years the concept has changed into a wholly different form or appearance from dealing in urban design and landscape architecture to construction of furniture.

COURSES

Aspiring architects need either a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (BArch) or Diploma in Architecture. The basic eligibility criterion for BArch courses is class XII or equivalent, from a recognised board/university with a minimum of 50% in science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics). Besides, the candidate needs to clear an architecture entrance examination. These days at the undergraduate level, architecture students are also given an overview of areas related to architecture -  such as urban or rural planning, interior design, urban design, transport planning, landscape design, urban or building conservation, design of sustainable buildings, construction management, architecture theory, history and pedagogy, etc. Besides educational qualifications, a person should possess observation skills, creativity, analytical and mathematical ability etc. to succeed as an architect.

·         Specialisations such as building sciences, building material engineering, project management, urban planning, urban design, landscape architecture, environment planners, software related disciplines  have emerged in this field and are more lucrative.
